Jewelry Care

All fine jewelry needs proper care. While certain pieces may need select care, most jewelry should be cared for using the following basics:

Jewelry is one of our most intimate and cherished accessories. Understanding how to care for and protect your treasured jewelry can make a world of difference in maintaining its beauty and keeping your heirlooms sparkling for generations to come.

BE CAREFUL WITH LIGHT AND HEAT

Just as the sun’s harmful rays can damage our skin, light and heat can affect a colored gemstone’s durability and color.

KEEP YOUR JEWELRY AWAY FROM CHEMICALS

Exposure to chemicals can damage or discolor precious metals – gold, silver and platinum – and may harm some colored gems. Even everyday substances like hairspray, lotion, perfume or other cosmetics can contain chemicals that will permanently damage the surface of your pearls and other delicate or porous gems (like turquoise). Fine jewelry should be removed before diving into a chlorinated swimming pool or before using household cleaners.

THE SAFEST CLEANING METHODS ARE ALSO THE EASIEST

Most colored gems can be cleaned with warm water, mild dish soap (no detergents) and a soft brush. A pulsed-water dental cleaning appliance and a soft, lint-free cloth can also be used. Be sure to rinse your jewelry in a glass of water to remove cleaning solutions since you risk losing loose stones – or even an entire piece of jewelry - if you rinse directly in the sink.

SAFELY STORE YOUR JEWELRY

  • Do not wear in water and dry quickly if the piece gets wet
  • Do not wear during exercise or in the case of extreme heat
  • Do not apply excessive lotions while wearing
  • Regularly clean bronze jewelry with a polishing cloth
  • Store in anti-tarnish bag provided at purchase
  • Use a polishing cloth to remove fingerprints prior to storage

Safe and Easy Cleaning Methods

Gemstones and diamonds can easily be cleaned with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft brush. Clean your jewelry in a bowl of warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Dry your piece with a lint‐free cloth.

Softer gems, like pearls, can be scratched easily. Clean your pearls in warm, slightly soapy water, with a very soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and lay your pearls to dry on a towel or chamois. Since silk thread will stretch, it's best to let the pearls sit until the strand is completely dry.
